Goodbye, Only Child: A Letter to My Daughter Before the Birth of My Second Child

Dear Sweet Ella,

It has been such a pleasure to be your mom for the last two and a half years. You’ve developed into my favorite little sidekick, my tiny companion on all number of errands, the one who narrates our days together as we live them. Most of the time, especially during the week, it’s just you and me.

Mommy and Daughter

And now, we have a new little girl coming to join our family. No longer will it just be the two of us having our daily routine. Now there will be two little girls to keep happy and dressed and fed. Now you’ll have to share my attention on a regular basis.

As excited as I am about this new little person that will be part of our family, it’s hard for me to say goodbye to this part of my life, where it was just me and you. I’ve loved this sweet time together, and it breaks my heart a little that you won’t remember this time of your life, any more than I remember my time as an only child before my younger siblings were born.

I promise to still take you on little outings with just the two of us. I promise I’ll still love you just as much as I did when you didn’t have a sibling. I promise that, while things won’t be the same, they’ll still be wonderful and we’ll still be a happy little family.

I hope you’ll be happy that you have a sibling, a little sister, a constant little friend.

Thanks for being my first girl. I love you so much,
