Crib, check. Car seat, check. Everything else that I could possibly ever need or want and then some, check.
Know what I can’t save neatly labeled in a bin or safely tucked away in storage for future babies? Diapers. Well, maybe cloth diapers but that’s a different post for a different day. Diapers are the absolute number one necessity. They’re used every…single…day. Multiple times a day. Sometimes immediately after changing one you need another. If the baby doesn’t sleep in its crib, it’ll sleep next to you. If baby refuses to sit in its stroller, you’ll carry your little one. If baby doesn’t have diapers, well, then you got your hands full.
I deserve a big pat on the back. When I was pregnant with my first I purchased —or registered for— all gender neutral baby gear. I knew I was having a girl, but I also knew I wanted more kids. The crib, stroller, car seat, high chair, bassinet, etc., worked for a girl or boy. Go figure, I have three girls. I could have sprung for the pink crib! Hello, pop of color! I digress. What I wasn’t prepared for was the amount of diapers I would need. And I needed a lot!
When you’re a new mom, whether it’s your first or your fourth, going out to buy diapers is quite the trip. I’m talking about those first few weeks and months. When you can’t remember if you’ve brushed your teeth and haven’t slept more than 2 hours straight per night. That moment you find you don’t have any more diapers and you just want to cry along with your newborn. Then you remember how awesome your friends and family are for giving you a stock of diapers at your baby shower and sanity is restored.
And let’s hear it for the wipes. Because diapers and wipes go together like peanut butter and jelly, Mickey and Minnie, and well… diapers and wipes. You can’t have one without the other. (Am I the only one still singing?)
When I became pregnant with my second, the gender was supposed to be a surprise. I caved during the ultrasound, because I mean really, who has the willpower when your hormones are off whack and your little peanut is right there on the screen? A girl! I was thrilled for two reasons: 1. My oldest was going to have a sister, 2. I had everything I would need for a girl. Except diapers. When my best friend asked me what I wanted for the baby, I replied “just diapers”. “No seriously?” she replied. It was the only thing I needed that I lacked.
Sure enough, with my second daughter’s arrival, I received a huge supply of diapers in various sizes. Best-est best friend ever. She got my baby’s back. Literally. It gave me peace of mind and relieved my husband from those frantic phone calls “I’m out of diapers and I need one now!!!”.
So take note friends, diapers are exactly what a new mom wants and needs.
