The Importance of Reading to Babies

Reading to your baby is one of the most important things you can do to encourage their development. At Fern’s 9 month well baby check up last week I asked her doctor if there was anything I should know or be doing during the next few months until her next appointment and her only instruction: “Read to her as much as you possibly can.” It’s lucky for me that Fern is already showing a serious love for literature and she has shelves full of books thanks to her doting grandparents, but some kids aren’t quite as lucky to have such access to good reading material. This is why I’d like to introduce a program that you can participate in that will be donating books to children this month in honor of National Family Literacy Day.

Capital One Investing For Good is sponsoring a Book by Book program that will donate a book to a child in need for every “like” they receive on Facebook. There is also an opportunity to vote for your tops 5 favorites children’s books and the top picks will be included in their donation.

You can find more details at Capital One’s site or over at my blog where I’m hosting a $25 Barnes & Noble giftcard giveaway in honor of the cause in the hopes that it will be extra incentive to get you to participate. This really is a wonderful program to encourage young readers, so I hope you’ll all join in and be a part of it!
