12 Tips & Tricks for Surviving the Flu, From One Exhausted Mama to Another

I am writing this in the midst of a flu epidemic. Every Stroessner at our house has been gifted with an ugly dose of the stomach flu. Adair had it first. Then I got it. Like a game of tag, I passed it on to my husband. At 3 AM last night, Ingrid joined the club. Our pet fish, Truman, did not survive. (May he rest in peace.) We are one sorry bunch over here. To make things even more stressful, we are snowed in and we are supposed to move to our new house this Saturday. It kind of seems like the sky is falling. But soon, I know the fog will lift. The stench of vomit will no longer linger and I will soon be able to see and think clearly thanks to a decent night of sleep. (Maybe not tonight, but soon.) Flu season is my enemy. From runny noses and hoarse coughs to fevers and throw-up, I’ve had quite enough of it this year. Here are a few tips & tricks that have made the “getting through” just a tad easier to get through…

  • Baby Comes First

    I know it’s hard to drop everything and surrender to sickness, but it’s necessary. Don’t worry if the house is a mess or if you have to miss a meeting. When your baby is sick, the other things in life can move to the back burner!

  • Cuddle with Your Munchkin

    This is probably the only perk of your babe getting sick. Soak it up! Let your baby sleep on you for an hour, rock your little one while you sing her favorite lullaby, hold your sweetums close when they don’t feel good…

  • Food? Check. Meds? Check.

    There’s nothing worse than having to run out last minute to the grocery store for food or medicine. During flu season, keep your pantry and medicine cabinet stocked. You never know when a cold or flu bug will be making its way to your door!

    Both of my girls love a bath when they aren’t feeling well. The warm water seems to soothe them, leaving them clean and (usually) more content.

  • Fluids!


    Staying hydrated is key for overcoming the flu, especially for babies. Keep the fluids coming. If you are nursing, don’t stop when you or the baby is sick. Drink plenty of water so your babe stays hydrated as well.

    When your little one has a tummy bug, it’s important to have extra pjs, sheets, and blankets close by so your wake-up calls go as smoothly and quickly as possibly. (I’m pretty sure Ingrid had four different wardrobe changes last night.)

    I can hear my elementary school nurse harping this one to my class, but it’s the truth. Washing your hands is so important! Wash your hands, your baby’s hands, and any surface that your sick baby may have touched.

    (Okay, here’s one more perk!) When your babe is sick, there’s nothing wrong with watching a little something! Sometimes the only way to make it through is to snuggle and take it easy while watching a favorite movie…

  • Breathe!


    Fresh air is not only good for the body, it’s a mood-lifter too. If you’re snowed in, this may not be the best idea. Otherwise, try and get some fresh air. Bundle your baby up and step out on the deck for a few minutes. Take a ride to get some drive-thru coffee. Getting out of the house can help!

  • Lean on Friends and Family

    If friends and family offer to help, take them up on it. If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask. (I know that’s easier said than done.) Ask a neighbor to grab some diapers while they are out. Let Grandma watch the kids for a few minutes while you shower.

  • Take Care of Y-O-U

    Yes, mamas, YOU are important too. Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep. Take your vitamins. Eat your dinner. Have a glass of wine. Do what you need to do to take care of yourself so you can take care of your little ones when they need you most.

    When you feel like the world is coming to an end, remember that tomorrow is another day. The sun will eventually come out and you will soon forget how wretched the flu really is. I promise!
