RunDisney: Post-Baby Fitness Motivation

It’s never easy getting back to shape after baby mainly because of lack of time and complete exhaustion. However, where there’s a will, there’s a way and us mamas usually get what we want!

Way before having our first child, my husband taught me how to run and in 2004 I ran my first marathon. Through the years running has been my main source of fitness — mostly because it’s something I can do with my husband, it’s free, it’s a great way to relieve stress and it clears my mind.

After my first child was born, I couldn’t even THINK about running. I was tired, completely out of shape and frankly I was scared to get back out there. However, I found that having something to work towards, like a race gave me the motivation to keep going. That’s how I trained and completed the Virgin London Marathon in April 2011.

I shed tears seeing my boys cheers me on along the way and the feeling of completing 26.2 miles in one piece and knowing I had trained and fought off all of the “mom” excuses was a glorious moment.

The truth is with a little organization and support it’s possible to get out and get running and I hope I can encourage you busy mamas out there to get out and hit the pavement. Here are some quick tips to get you started (as always consult with your doctor first):

1. Buy proper running shoes — Go to a running store and them watch you run on a treadmill so they recommend the best shoes. DON’T go cheap, this is your biggest and most important investment.

2. Proper running clothes — You need clothing that fits properly, keeps you warm in the winter, cool in the summer and prevents chaffing. Check out RunDisney gear from The Disney Store or head to Target for your basics from Champion.

3. Running watch — Instead of focusing on how many miles you run, it’s best to run by time. For instance, say you will go running for 30 minutes and then work your way up. Log your times so that you can see your improvement week to week.

4. Baby joggger/stroller  — No one to leave the baby with? No problem! Take the babe with you in a running/jogging stroller. My son loved the speed and it made for a great little outing followed by a little picnic. P.S. Buy second hand to save money.

5. Run/Walk Method — Think you CAN’T run? Well, you CAN! A method used by trainer Jeff Galloway, where you run for five  minutes followed by one minute of fast walking. That is how I have trained for all of my races and it’s a brilliant and realistic way to train!

Ready to find a race? Disney has JUST what you need to get fit.  YES! RunDisney is a series of races organized by Disney to get you and the family healthy and fit. It’s simple — select the event you want to run, download your training plan, get training,  then head to Disney for a fun run and much needed family vacation — MAGICAL!  Running for the Mouse, how’s that for motivation?!
