There are lots of tips out there on how to be a better parent. I have heard hundreds of them before, but the one that I think is the most important is one I don’t think we like to admit out loud sometimes. We are ashamed to say it in case it makes us seem like bad parents. Do you have any guesses?
The one simple tip that I think really helps us be better parents is spending time away from the kids.
Yep. I said it. Spend time away from the kids. It’s funny how this one simple idea gets pushed behind all of life’s busyness as a parent. There are always a hundred things to do instead of making plans to have a date night, girls night, a weekend away, etc…
Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs out there. It doesn’t begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m.; It’s ongoing, with no breaks. For as much joy and reward as it brings, however, it is certainly draining. My husband and I just took a weekend away together. Just the two of us. It was much needed and gave me a refreshed and renewed spirit to come home with. Of course at the end of the weekend, I couldn’t wait to get home and see our daughter, but I really valued that time away.
It doesn’t have to be a lot. I think even an hour here and there can help. We owe it to ourselves and our kids to have a clear head and rejuvenated spirit so we can be our absolute best for them.
Have you spent some time away lately?
