When you go into this parenting thing, you assume the responsibility for molding and shaping a little life and for teaching them about the world. Little do you know that they will be teaching you plenty along the way as well. Even as a second-time mom, there are still plenty of things I’m learning from my tiny, little baby.
3 Things My Newborn Is Teaching Me:
1. Time is fleeting.
Perhaps it’s the fact that my 7-week-old is growing like a weed (he’s 2 feet tall and weighs over 13 pounds already!) and his 2-year-old sister is looking like a teenager these days, but I’m realizing just how fleeting time is and how much I need to savor these moments. Even though these moments are sometimes challenging…like when he wants to be held 24/7…I know that I’m going to miss these snuggles when he’s a grown up boy and off doing his own things.
2. Stop and smell the roses.
Having a newborn really just makes you slow down and the slow pace was a breath of fresh air and just what I needed. Some days I barely left the couch as we just hung out and my little guy nursed all day long. I was reminded to slow down and appreciate the little things…like those dark chocolate covered pretzels I got to enjoy from my perch on the sofa.
3. Take time for the things that really matter.
I am a “yes” person. I say yes to everything and often end up over committing to things and feeling overwhelmed. Having a new baby has shown me that I only have so many hours during a day, and I can’t do it all. It’s been a lesson in prioritizing and letting go of the things in my life that are superfluous in order to make time for the things that really matter.
