Dear Baby, I Hope You Never Lose Your Sense of Wonder

Dear Baby Z,

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder. The world is a fascinating place right now. New tastes, sounds, sights, and sensations. You test your limits and accomplish things, and this excites you! Never tire from the excitement of learning something new. Always explore your surroundings. Discover alternative ways to do things. Never shy away from the unfamiliar. This life is what you make of it, make it a wonderful one!

One day, things will become ordinary, overlooked, forgotten. You may pass a dahlia in full bloom if you are not paying attention. You may miss a gorgeous sunset sky if you do not look up. You may skip the sweetness of ripe fruit off your grandmother’s trees if you don’t take the time to explore her garden. Take time to appreciate the world around you, just as you once did as a baby. I hope you never lose your sense of wonder.

You will grow to find that life can be harsh and unkind. Seek out the beauty of this world. Give of yourself in a way that helps others and you will find immeasurable happiness. Surround yourself with generous and gracious people so that you may embody these traits. Take time for quiet contemplation. Lose yourself in the beautiful natural spaces that surround you. Well, don’t exactly get lost because that will terrify me as your mother. But still my dear child, I hope you never lose your sense of wonder.

Even if you’ve seen dozens of kittens, let your heart race and voice squeal with delight each time you carry one. Regardless of the number of homemade chocolate chip cookies you’ve eaten, be sure to savor each fresh-from-the-oven bite. And never, ever take for granted the sound of the ocean, the sight of the waves, or the feeling of the sand between your toes. I hope you never lose your sense of wonder.

When you’re older, will you remember how much joy you felt to have running water flow over your hands? As you grow, will you still love swinging at the park with the wind blowing through your delicate hair? One day you’ll be too tall and Baba (daddy) will be too old to throw you up into the air and catch you in his arms. This memory might only be one we remember of you as your parents. One day these experiences won’t be new, but I hope you never lose your sense of wonder.

My darling girl, everything in this world is a gift, a blessing. Appreciate the small details of a delicate blossom and the aroma of fresh baking bread. Try new things without hesitation. Let the beauty around you inspire you to create your own beautiful ideas. Admire animals; their shapes, sizes, colors. Collect experiences, not things. Chase your dreams wherever they take you. Above everything else, I hope you never lose your sense of wonder.
