Moms Working For You: Real Life Wellness

So many moms I know joke about how they chugged down a diet soda for breakfast while they were pureeing organic baby food for their precious newborn. It’s so easy to get caught up in the demands of motherhood that we forget to take care of ourselves. While I tend to love all mom-owned businesses, this is one that has made a real difference for me as a mom of three little kids. Cristie, known by many as The Right Hand Mom, is a blogger who started her own health and wellness business, Real Life Wellness. Though she’s on the east coast, she coached me over the phone and helped me discover that poor food choices were causing some of my biggest health issues — including what seemed to be seasonal allergies. While I’m far from perfect, I’m a lot happier and healthier thanks to her. (Oh, and perfection isn’t her thing, so that makes it a whole lot easier to learn from her — and like her.)

  • What inspired you to start your business?

What inspired you to start your business?

“I started by using my stories as a way to connect and not feel so alone as a new mom. In sharing trials and triumphs I heard from people what resonated and helped them work through things of their own. I realized my life journey was full of potential to help other people so I pursued the education to necessary to be able to help even more.”

  • What's one simple thing families can do for wellness?

What's one simple thing families can do for wellness?

“Planning. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, just look at your calendar, make appropriate grocery lists & stock your cupboards. That goes a long way toward health and wellness for everyone, including you. Not to mention a plan makes for peace. Don’t try to be Martha, just be a more calm and prepared You. There are great tools for this that I share often on my blogs. Start there.

  • What are some quick, healthy snack ideas?

What are some quick, healthy snack ideas?

“I always tell people stay as close to real as you can. Nuts (if there are no allergies, of course), hummus & pita, chopped fruit, and veggies are all good. Anything I find that my kids like, I share as often as I can because I know it seems as soon as you think you have it figured out, kids change their minds.”

  • What should all moms know?

    What should all moms know?

“Being healthy isn’t one more thing to feel guilty about. I coach 80-20 balance. There’s a lot of junk out there, but eating well doesn’t have to be torture. Educate yourself enough to make the best choices 80% of the time, then you are off the hook for the 20%. Learn some stuff, pass it on to your kids, then sit back and enjoy the gift that parenting (mostly) is. You’re doing a great job.”

If RLW were a Disney character, who would it be?

“I wish I could say we’d be a powerful sorcerer or princess, but the truth is we’d probably be Goofy. At our very core, Real Life Wellness is a little silly and — above all — just trying to make life fun.”

What was your favorite Disney moment?

“I lost my dad when I was a very little girl. One of the last things he did was take all six of his kids to Disney World. The image of my dad holding me at the entrance to Magic Kingdom, both of us all smiles, is etched on my heart forever.”
