Inside the Diaper Bag: Secret Weapons
By Kelly Bryant
It may be called a diaper bag, but that giant accessory you tote around holds much more than a quick change for your baby. We asked moms to give us a peek inside of their diaper bags. Here’s what they can’t live without.

Sunblock
“My son is so fair-skinned that I can’t chance going anywhere without it, no matter what time of year. It’s a staple for us!” - Leah M.

Baby Cell Phone
“At least one of those pretend baby cell phones – that has gotten me through the grocery store at record speed. I pull out my real phone and pretend like I’m calling my daughter. She loves the sounds it makes. It keeps the peace.” - Tara M.

Snacks and Sippy Cups
“I always have a small container of snacks (either Goldfish crackers or Cheerios). Nothing turns a bad mood around for my son like some crackers! Oh, and I also make sure to carry a sippy cup in there.”
- Meridith D.

Clothes-to-Go
“I bring a spare outfit for my daughter no matter where we go, even if it’s just while running a quick errand. You never know when disaster might strike.” - Marisa F.

Chair Cover
“I love to have the grocery cart/chair cover in the diaper bag any time we go out. It doesn’t just help protect my daughter from germs, the rattle toys that hang off of it keep her entertained while I’m trying to either eat or get shopping done.” - Jessica S.

A Few Puppets
“Hand puppets are great for keeping in my diaper bag. They’re compact and I can multi-task and put on a little show for my baby while we’re out and about. It really helps keep him occupied and at some point he always wants to put the puppet on his hand, too. I get a lot of mileage out of them.” - Victoria S.

Camera
“I keep a small camera in my diaper bag so that I don’t miss any cute moments. It also comes in handy if we’re waiting in line somewhere because I can flip through and show my 18-month-old all of the older photos on the camera. He loves that!” - Tina H.

Wipes
“These towelettes that are safe to use on baby’s face and hands are great for my diaper bag because they help make clean up more efficient, especially if we’re snacking on the go.” - Jeanine D.

Water Bottle
“I pack a water bottle every time we leave the house just in case a sippy cup needs replenishing or we need a little water to clean up a mess. It always seems to come in handy.” - Katie K.

Art Supplies
“Disposable placemats and crayons are in my diaper bag just in case we’re at a restaurant that doesn’t have that kind of thing on hand. It’s good for messy eaters and for entertaining a toddler!” - Chrissy T.
