Go, Baby, Go! Essentials for When You're Out and About
By Kelly Bryant
When you’re on the run with your little one, it’s important to think like a Scout: Be Prepared. Make each outing a success by maintaining these go-to essentials for everything from those planned play dates to spur-of-the-moment errands and everything in between.

DIY Diapering Kit
Keep diapers, wipes and a changing pad (either a reusable one or a few disposables) in an easy-to-find pouch that can be moved swiftly from diaper bag to purse or even carried on its own for less bulk.

Sunblock
Regardless of the time of year or how high the sun is in the sky when you leave the house, keep Baby-safe, fragrance-free sunblock on hand in case you find yourself outdoors. Babies have delicate skin, and while it’s important for everyone to protect themselves from the sun’s harmful UV rays, the younger set is particularly at risk for sun damage.

Snacks
If your baby has been introduced to the wonderful world of solids, keeping snacks on hand when you’re out and about is vital. If he’s comfortable with finger foods, pack a bag of puffs or Cheerios®. Not quite there yet? Bananas are not only easy to mash up but incredibly portable. Pack a few disposable spoons in case of emergencies!

Bottle/Sippy Cup
Keep a spill-proof bottle or sippy cup on hand to quench your cutie’s thirst. Or, if you’re still breastfeeding, make sure to have that nursing cover at the ready to keep Baby content.

Small Toys
Keep a couple of small, easy-to-carry toys in your diaper bag or car for some impromptu entertainment for Baby. Pretend cell phones or stroller toys can keep your pumpkin occupied while you attempt to grocery shop or run other errands that he might find mundane.

Blanket
A lightweight blanket can serve many purposes when you’re away from home, providing extra warmth if the weather suddenly turns chilly being the most obvious. It can also be draped over a stroller to shield Baby from the sun or encourage a nap while you’re on a stroll. Additionally, in the event of diaper leakage or another poorly timed kiddie mishap, it can be used to cover the soiled area until you get home.

Bibs
Save that special outfit from potential ruin by toting a couple of bibs around, cloth or disposable. Bibs can also act as a wash cloth if you need to clean up sticky hands or a food-stained face.

Hand Sanitizer
This one is for Mama — and anyone else who wants to hold Baby. While you can’t protect your little one from every germ in the world, keeping your hands clean can certainly fight off the baddies and help keep your child healthy. Look for a sanitizer that is all-natural and alcohol-free.

Change of Clothes
Keep a “just in case” change of clothes tucked into your diaper bag for those oops moments. It wouldn’t hurt to have an extra shirt on hand for yourself, too.

Plastic Bags
Keep the inside of your diaper bag clean by carrying plastic baggies to contain wet clothing, dirty diapers, and other waste until they can be tossed into the laundry or disposed of.
