When you have kids, one of the pieces of advice that you will hear over and over again is to remember to still make time for date nights with your partner. It can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of parenting and lose track of nurturing your relationship. One thing you won’t hear about as often is the importance of having family date nights, but they really are wonderful.
Like a lot of families, we work hard. My husband heads off to work every day and I work from home and by the end of the day we aren’t feeling particularly motivated to do a whole lot. Relaxing at home is great and home is my most favorite place on the planet to be, but getting out and doing things as a family is so important too.
Family dates are a great way to focus on one another without the distractions of being at home – particularly for families where one parent stays home (or works from home) while they other is gone at work. Because I am home all day with our daughter we get to do a lot of fun things together. Trips to the zoo, grocery shopping, play dates, etc… Unfortunately my husband misses out on these daily kinds of activities. When we have family dates though, it gets us all out of our element and focused on spending time together. I’m not distracted by the work at home (dishes to do, laundry to fold, blog posts to write…) and we are both more engaged in interacting with our daughter.
It can be easy to fall into a routine rut in a family, just as it can be in a marriage, so it’s important to nurture it and make fun memories together. It doesn’t always have to be a date where you leave the house (though for me that is often the best part since I work from home) as long as it is intentional.
A few ideas to get you started:
-Dinner date at a fun, family/friendly place in town
-Pose for some good old fashioned photo booth photos
-Go to the zoo
-Pop by the pet store
-Build a fort in the living room and watch a show together
-Family frozen yogurt date
-Head to the beach
What are your favorite family dates with little ones? I would love to hear your ideas!
