Whether it be a family reunion, birthday party or BBQ, food is such a huge part of summer celebrations. From pies and corn on the cob to fresh salads and veggies, there is plenty for everyone to sink their teeth into. But what about our little family members without teeth? You know, those pint-sized cuties who love to sport their shiny gums or if they are lucky 2-4 pearly whites.
From 6 months and on, most babies are beginning to experiment with a variety of different foods and flavors. All three of my children had different tastes and preferences, however they were all intrigued and eager to try anything that was bright, beautiful and pleasing to the eye.
Red, white and blue are three eye-catching colors and they just so happen to be patriotic (wink, wink) and pink is appealing to everyone! Here are four of my favorite healthy treats that add a boost of nutrition with a whole lot of flavor. They also add a nice pop of color to their dish.
Two of my sons all-time favorite foods together in one bowl = heaven. Blueberries and raspberries are nice and soft, making them perfect for babies. Just make sure you mush them a bit or squish them between my fingers to prevent your little one from choking.
This is actually one of my preferred drinks for hot summer days, but it makes a great chilled ‘soup’ for baby. Not only does it cool you right off, it tastes delicious and is high in vitamins and antioxidants.
Step 1: Cut 1/4 of a seedless watermelon into chunks (make sure you remove the rind first) and place it in a blender with a handful of ice and puree. If your blender isn’t the most powerful you may have to add a couple drops of water to get it going.
Step 2: Once the watermelon has been “juiced” add a couple of handfuls of ice and blend again.
Step 3: Pour and serve.
They aren’t technically ‘white’ but they are pretty darn close and when served on a cute little plate against the blue and red berries, they look even more appealing.There are three ways I like to serve my babies their bananas. Mashed, cut into small chunks and in ice cream.
Those who are concerned about dairy allergies will love this as the only ingredient in this ‘ice cream’ is banana! The recipe is quite simple.
Healthy Ice Cream Recipe
Step 1: Peel one banana, cut it in chunks and freeze the pieces until solid (I like to place them on parchment paper to prevent sticking)
Step 2: Place the frozen banana chunks into a food processor with a touch of water and pulse until it turns into a creamy frozen treat.
You can even add frozen peaches or berries to this to make different varieties. Babies absolutely love it and it’s soothing for when they are teething. Just be sure to make a little extra as I can assure you everyone will want some!
