Ways I Want My Daughter to be Like Sofia the First

While most 20-month olds aren’t watching much TV, my daughter, “Pink”, has two big brothers who get a bit of screen time each day. All three of them (yes, even my almost 7-year-old son) love Sofia the First on Disney Junior. I had the thrill of introducing the new princess to Disney Baby awhile back, and now I’ve been catching an episode here or there. As I watch, I couldn’t be happier that this is a show my kids choose. I’m really impressed with Princess Sofia and the lessons she’s teaching girls and boys. Here are just a few of the ways I hope Pink will be like Sofia when she gets older.

While material beauty surrounds Princess Sofia, she’s teaching girls — and boys — that being a good person is what matters most.

Each time something oh-so spectacular happens in Sofia’s world, she’s ready to embrace it. She’s not presumptuous, but she does appreciate beauty, magic, and opportunity.

Nobody is perfect — even princesses. Sofia is willing to come to the realization she’s made a mistake, then takes responsibility to fix it.

Sofia respects authority, while challenging tradition. When she joins in with the boys, she does it with feminine strength and flair. And she’s willing to work just as hard, if not harder than them, to succeed.

Sofia is willing to go out on her own to try new things, but she never does it at the expense of her personal relationships. She has strong bonds with her family, friends, and animal buddies.
