The Best Hand-Knit & Crocheted Sweaters for Newborn Babies
This morning I was greeted to burnished copper and bright reds on the tree just outside my window reminding me that fall is in fact here. This change of seasons seem to happen overnight. Just last week my son was wearing his shorts and short sleeve button downs and today he’s dressed in overalls and a sweater!
Knit sweaters are my favorite for babies. My grandmother knit me and each one of my siblings a full layette before we were born. I remember sitting with her as she knit sweaters, booties and hats for each one of them. I admired the lacy work so much and hoped that one day I would be able to do the same for my own kids. Unfortunately I never did find the time to make those sweaters, but my grandma gifted me with a full set for my eldest. It meant more than words could really say. There is nothing like those handmade sweaters.
With fall in full swing I wanted to share some of my favorite handmade sweaters for newborns. These are so beautiful they could very well be called heirloom pieces. Warm, delicate and gentle. Just like your new baby.
Pure White Classic
White is classic, just like this gorgeous set. The ribbons, the mini buttons, the lacy knit – everything about this set reminds me of the sets my grandma used to knit.
Kimonos & Bears
Bears are cuddly, and so is this crocheted set in cream and green. The hat features button eyes and braided ties, while the booties fold over in a cute kimono style. I especially love the collar on this sweater!
The Mini Aran Cable
Mini aran cable sweaters? The epitome of a cute fall/winter look. Made from the finest 100% Merino wool and featuring gorgeous cable work and detailing complete with wooden buttons, this aran cable sweater is truly one of the sweetest gifts for a new baby.
The Gender Neutral Knit Jacket
I like the jacket style of this sweater and it’s looser fit as it makes for easier layering. The four wooden buttons add a sweet vintage flair and the light green color makes this a great gender neutral pick.
Hand Knit Woolen Baby Sweater in Olive Green
This gorgeous olive shade reminds me of a certain high-end designer who recently debuted their fall line. Slightly flared and featuring mini cables along the front and back, this woolen jacket is a beautiful piece to add to your son or daughter’s winter wardrobe.
This beautiful ivory set is made from natural eco cotton in a delicate eyelet lace pattern with scalloped edges. Taupe ribbons add a nice contrast to the sweet booties and I’m loving the stylish pearl button closures.
Luxury Blue Alpaca
Alpaca is one of the most luxurious yarns out there and is incredibly soft to the touch. Knit using a vintage pattern and adorned with blue ribbons and shiny blue buttons, this is a gorgeous set for baby girls.
Those ears are just too sweet! Unlike the many solid sets we’ve seen, this one is made in a gorgeous ivory flecked yarn and trimmed in a solid mauve. Another gender neutral piece that would be an excellent choice for photography sessions.
Classic Cable Merino
Cables adorn the front of this is a gorgeous set and border the button closures. Because of the luxury yarn used, this is a pricier sweater, but one that could very well be passed down from generation to generation.
I don’t know what’s cuter, the stem and leaves on the top of the hat or the pom-poms on the jacket. Green and purple are the new gender neutral!
Delicate & Scalloped
Scalloped edging and the delicate ribbing on the bottom adds such an elegant touch to this matching white sweater and bootie set. Suitable for both boys and girls, this would fit a newborn to 6 month old.
Two-Tones For Baby Boys
There is so much whimsical detail in this two-toned newborn sweater and shoe set. The little shoes have cute ‘shoe lace’ detailing and the car buttons on the sweater are just darling.
Vintage Baby Set
I was torn as to whether or not I should include this vintage set as there is only one available. A true heirloom piece, this vintage sweater coat, hat and shoe set is from the 1950s era and came from an estate in Maine. The sweater was hand knit with small needles and there are no seams which add to the beauty of this piece.
