The Anatomy of a Nursing Basket

When I first heard of a nursing basket, I was amazed. Why didn’t I think of this?! It’s such a genius little basket of goodies that every new mother needs at her side. It would make the PERFECT gift for a new mom. My friend Gretchen of That Mama Gretchen shared exactly how to put one of these little nursing baskets together. She was kind enough to let me share here, with you…

A nursing basket is simply a basket of must-haves for nursing mothers. It is stocked with breastfeeding supplies, snacks, and a few things for baby, all within an arm’s reach to make things easier on everyone. Here are a few ideas for what to include:

  1. Disposable nursing pads – for the first leaky days
  2. Burp cloths – for baby
  3. Washable nursing pads – for leaks after nursing has been well-established
  4. Lanolin – for dry or cracked nipples
  5. Something to read – for the long nursing sessions
  6. A cute basket or bin – to keep everything in
  7. Water – so mom stays hydrated
  8. Coconut oil – for dry skin on mom and baby
  9. Lotion – for mom
  10. Chapstick – for dry or cracked lips
  11. Hair accessories – so mom can easily pull back her hair
  12. Snacks – for mom’s needed extra calories
Another idea that I’ve seen is to include a little something for an older sibling – a book, a toy, etc. This can be a special thing for them to enjoy only while mama is nursing the new baby! Isn’t this a great idea? Thanks again, Gretchen, for letting me feature your nursing basket!
