Second Baby Necessities
As a general rule, I think many first-time parents overbuy for their first child and then realize down the road that there were things they didn’t need.
On the other hand, now that I have a second child, there are a couple of items I really love now that I thought were superfluous when I only had one child:
Despite my older daughter’s love of pacifiers, I never used a pacifier clip for her. Now, I’m completely sold on one – we leave it clipped to the carseat strap and I never have to worry that I’ve left the house without it and it doesn’t disappear during park trips or on a car ride. With two children, I just don’t need to be worrying about spending mental energy wondering where the pacifier has gone off to.
I got a hand-me-down BabyBjorn from a friend a few months after Ella was born. I think I used it twice. Now, with a toddler running around and a constant need to have my hands free, I’ve become a total convert. I have a MobyWrap too, that I use any time we walk to the park, go grocery shopping. I like the MobyWrap because the baby can sleep a little more comfortably, and I like that my husband and I can both use the Bjorn.
An Actual Diaper Bag
I never bought a diaper bag for my first daughter. I just bought a big purse and it was perfect. This time around, I bought an even bigger purse and figured I’d be good to go. Not so – even a light packer like me has to carry too much to be able to fit it easily into a purse and it is impossible to find ANYTHING in the one giant compartment. Also, the weight of the stuff I carry around means that I’ve torn the straps on my purse in just three months of use. Time to upgrade to a real diaper bag!
