Real Party Inspiration: Parker Penny’s Rainbow First Birthday

Ruthy Taylor is one of my favorite bloggers (check out her blog: Discovery Street) and when I saw some photos of her little Parker Penny’s rainbow-colored balloon themed birthday party popping up in her Instagram feed, I immediately asked if I could share the photos as party inspiration here at Disney Baby and luckily she agreed! The party is filled with fun, bright colors and a couple of super fun Korean traditions and I can’t wait for you to see it! Click through and be inspired! Thank you for letting me share Ruthy and thank you to Lindsy Read of LMR Photography for so many lovely photos.

    Balloon wall

This lovely balloon wall was a key component in tying the party’s theme together. Parker’s mama Ruthy did a brilliant job with this and the idea is great for others to borrow, because balloons are inexpensive, so a focal wall like this packs a big punch for a small price.

Guests got to peruse photos of Parker from her first year that were hanging on a line. Another great idea to add interest at a party in a budget-friendly way!

Here’s a close-up of one of the hanging photos. I love how Ruthy dressed up the clothespins with brightly colored paper to make it pop and tie the photo display in with the rest of the brightly colored decor.

I love the simple and sweet balloon theme that carried over onto Parker’s smash cake and the cupcakes! The idea of using little lollipops as balloon cake toppers is genius!

The rainbow colored balloon theme was carried into the outdoors as well with these fun pennants and even more balloons.

  • Hanbok

    Hanbok

Parker’s mama Ruthy is Korean, which means that Parker is half Korean, so they decided to incorporate a couple of fun Korean traditions, including having Parker wear a traditional Korean dress called a hanbok. I love that the dress coordinates with the colorful decor.

  • Doljanchi

    Doljanchi

Parker’s hanbok was worn during the Doljanchi tradition. Ruthy says, “I didn’t incorporate any of the traditional decor, but I decided to do the ceremonial ‘picking of items.’ In Korean tradition you lay out items that represent your child’s future. The items have changed over the years and you can really put out anything you’d like.” Guests got to mark their best guess for what Parker would choose.

    The items

The items that were laid out for Parker to choose from were: a gavel to symbolize a judge, a paint brush to represent an artist, money for wealth, a microphone to represent a future as an entertainer, a book to symbolize a scholar, and a ball to represent athlete.

Parker chose the ball! I guess that means her parents will be attending many sporting events in the future! Such a fun tradition!

    Cake time!

After all the other festivities, it was time for Parker to enjoy her adorable smash cake and enjoy it she did! Also, take note of how the balloon wall made the perfect backdrop for cake photos! And I love how Ruthy tied rainbow colored streamers to Parker’s high chair to make it more festive. Super fun and super simple!

At the end of the day Parker got to enjoy all of the balloons during tear-down. A definite bonus in the eyes of a one-year-old and a great way to end a fantastic first birthday!
