Photo Tips from a Pro: Capture Your Baby's Story

Tell your baby’s story in photos – wonderful, beautifully-shot photos. Professional photographer and mom, Me Ra Koh, shows you how to photograph your baby like a pro. Be sure to read on after the video for more of her simple but effective tips for how to capture your baby at his best.

Tips from Me Ra Koh:

What Story Do You Want to Tell?
As photographer Me Ra Koh puts it, “Telling a story with a camera is very similar to telling a story with your pen.” Before you start shooting, pause to decide what you’d like to capture. The easiest way to do this is to just stop for a moment and pay attention to what’s happening right in front of you. What is your baby doing? Is he happy or excited about something? Is he sucking on his toe? Trying to stand up on his wobbly legs? Find these moments and focus in on them with your camera.

Turn Off Your Flash
Your baby is beautiful as she is, so don’t wash out her skin color or create unnecessary shadows by using a flash. Use natural light instead.

Face the Light
To find the best source of natural light in your home, Me Ra Koh suggests going through the house and picking the brightest rooms at the time of day your baby is the happiest. “Instead of seeing yourself as someone who is taking pictures, step outside of that for a minute and see yourself as someone who is observing light.” Often the easiest place to start is right on the bed facing the window. Your baby will be comfortable rolling around and you’ll have all the light you need to start snapping.

Set a Time Limit
Challenging yourself with new ideas and camera techniques is always good, but make sure to give yourself some time and space to grow. Let yourself progress day-by-day instead of spending hours searching for that perfect shot. Both you and your baby will be much happier taking it as it comes.
