Our Very Hungry Caterpillar 2nd Birthday Party
For my son’s 2nd birthday party, we decided to use his favorite book as the party theme: A Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
By 18 months, we already had to buy a second copy of the book because the first copy literally fell apart at the seams from reading and re-reading and re-reading. So the party theme was pretty much a no-brainer.
That, and it was so much fun to plan:
Dots, Dots, Dots
We decided to focus on the bright Eric Carle colors and iconic dots from the book. We threaded together tissue-paper circles (in a sewing machine) to make watercolor-like garland, and filled the ceiling with balloon “dots.”
Happy Birthday Noah!
I made a banner with bulletin-board strips that teachers usually buy. (I think I found them at Barnes ‘n Noble or The Teacher Store.) Luckily Eric Carle is a popular theme!
A Very Hungry Menu
Our menu was pulled straight from the book, and included things like deviled eggs on lettuce (“a little egg lay on a leaf”), and a cheese platter with apples, pears, and grapes (“…ate through one apple, two pears, and a slice of swiss cheese). We also had chocolate-covered strawberries (“…on Thursday he ate through four strawberries”), a big salad (“…on Sunday he ate a nice green leaf and felt much better), and other book-related foods.
More Dots!
We filled two glass pillars with gum balls to replicate the dots in the book, as well as punched circular confetti out of tissue paper.
A Very Hungry Cake
My sister made a cake out of cupcakes! She even frosted them with varying colors of green, to replicate Eric Carle’s signature style.
Crafts!
We had a bunch of crafts for the kids — including water-color paints and giant coloring pages. Kids could also make their own caterpillars out of pom-poms and other craft materials.
