Our Little Urban Farmer
Yesterday our little family welcomed six (yes, SIX) new members. They happen to be baby chicks who we will be raising as egg layers and we were so excited to introduce them to our daughter. Her favorite book/song in all the world is “Los Pollitos Dicen” (in English it means: “The Baby Chicks Are Singing”). We told her that Daddy would be bringing home some “pio pios” (that’s what we call baby chicks, because in Spanish the baby chicks say “pio pio” instead of “peep peep”), but we weren’t sure how it would go. Here’s a little slideshow of how things played out…

Meet the babies
They don’t have names yet, but that’s because I’m not really sure how to tell them apart yet.
“Squeeee!” is the only sound I can type out to possibly describe the excitement that Fern experienced when we first opened up the box and she saw these little yellow fluff balls that her Daddy had brought home from work.
Trying to pet them
Fern immediately tried to reach in the box and snuggle her new little friends.
Trying to get past mama to play with the chicks.
She kept pointing to the picture of the little chick on the side of the box and then pointing to the real chicks in the box. Her little wheels were definitely turning.
Fern became quite frustrated that we wouldn’t (couldn’t) let her hold her new friends. She just wanted to love them and it was so sad to not be able to explain to her why she couldn’t touch them.
Reading To Our Babies
Because Fern was so excited and frustrated, we took a break and sat down to read her “pio pio” book to the little chicks. It was cool seeing her eyes light up and her facial expressions change as she realized that our little chicks were the same as the ones in her book – she kept looking back and forth excitedly from the book to the babies. It was so neat to see her learning.
On her tiptoes watching her Daddy prep the coop in the back for our little babies.
Getting settled in
Checking out los pios and their new living space. Our dog Marley and Fern both made sure they were feeling comfortable and at home.
Snuggled up for the night
Good night baby chicks! We’re all excited for our new urban farming adventure and getting to know you!
