On The Day You Were Born
The day my daughter was born was the most wonderful day of my life to date. I sometimes flip back through photos and recount all of the little memories surrounding her birth and her first hours of life and it fills me with an overwhelming joy. I hope that one day she will come to me and ask, “Mama, can you tell me about the day I was born?” and I will give her an account filled with the sweet details. This is what I’ll tell her…
On the day you were born...
Your daddy and I went to a class to learn about having babies and afterward we got milkshakes and dreamed about you. We talked about what we thought you would look like and how we hoped you would come soon and I felt your little kicks fluttering in my tummy all the while.
You woke me up at 2:00 A.M. that morning...
and it would not be the first time, but I knew that you were getting ready to be born. I tried to go back to sleep, but you were persistent. We waited at home for a while and after a few hours we drove to the place where you were born. On the drive we talked about what your middle name might be and even though I was a little nervous, Daddy reminded me about how exciting it would be to finally meet you. Once we got there you and I spent a lot of time in the water doing a lot of hard work.
12 hours later...
you came into the world. You had been in a funny position, but you and I worked as a team and you came out healthy and bright eyed. Your head was a bit squished and Dad said you looked like a baby unicorn – the cutest baby unicorn there ever was.
You were...
born at 3:27 P.M. in Portland Oregon and you weighed 8 pounds 7 ounces. You were long – 21.25 inches! We couldn’t decide on a middle name until you were born and the one we chose fit you perfectly: Fern Winter. Winter, because you were born during winter’s first snow. You were so special even the snow couldn’t wait to meet you and it was magical holding you while those cold flakes fell softly outside.
After all that hard work...
we were both very hungry. I ate a giant piece of chocolate cake and you had milk.
You had...
long fingers, long toes and long arms and legs, just like your daddy and I couldn’t help but admire just how delicate you were.
We were...
smitten with you from the start…especially your Dad. The look on his face when he snuggled you in his arms was the sweetest look I’ve ever seen and you always had a special bond with him. You stared up at him with those big, beautiful eyes of yours and I knew it was the start of something special.
From our first moments together...
I knew that life would never be the same. I knew that you were going to change us in the very best way and that we were going to make so many wonderful memories together.
After all that excitement...
we were all tired and we cozied up to sleep; knowing that this was only the first of many adventures to come for our new, little family.
