Naming babies has never been something has come easily for me and my husband. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that we are the most indecisive people on the planet, easily throwing back the “I don’t know, what to do you want for dinner?” comments back and forth for hours, but whatever the issue is, baby naming = agonizing.
We struggled for months to pick names for our first daughter; we didn’t find out what we were having, so we doubled the trouble with picking two names, just in case.
With my second pregnancy, so great was our inner turmoil and indecisiveness in choosing names that we settled only a girl’s name. We hadn’t found out (again) what we were having, so we were actually taking a great risk in only choosing a girl’s name. Our conversation surrounding names went a little something like this:
Me: “I have a girl’s name picked out–unless you can pick a different one, let’s go with that one, ok?”
My husband: “Ok.”
And that’s how it went down. Without any other suggestions from my husband, we went the girl’s name I had picked out. And luckily, our baby complied by turning out to be a girl and it all worked out in the end.
When our third child happened along, we decided enough was enough: we found out what we were having (a boy) and thought that surely cutting down our options by half we would finally be able to conquer the name game.
We thought wrong.
Somehow, picking a name for the third time around, and a boy’s name at that, proved harder than we ever thought possible. We made lists, closed our eyes, and tried to pick; we did name cards and shuffled, took bets and did gambles–with no results.
In the end, we chose a name minutes before we left the hospital, at our nurse’s suggestion.
Now, with our fourth child, we are determined not to make the same mistake. Already, we have pretty much settled on a boy’s name and are learning towards to a girl’s name that starts with an “e”. So without further aideu…
