Sometimes when I get a moment to myself, I look back fondly at life before I had kids. It’s not that I would trade life now for life then, but I had some amazing experiences before I became a mother, and it’s fun to look back. It’s also interesting to me to consider what I was doing in my day to day life before I had kids versus now, with two children to care for and a lot less flexibility in my schedule. Young childhood goes by so fast that I don’t mind sacrificing some of my own personal goals to slow down and enjoy these years. While I am still me at my core, a lot of my outward life has changed quite a bit. Take a look at five goals that I had before kids and their corresponding goals now that I’ve got two littles. How have your goals changed now that you’re a parent?
My How Things Change
It’s only natural that my goals would change now that I have two kids.
Before Kids
I took a lot of time building a wardrobe that was cute so I could look great every day.
With 2 Kids
I’m not aiming to get dressed at all some days. I do try to look cute when I am leaving the house, but if we’re staying at home all day? Pajamas are my fave.
Before Kids
Not only did I run marathons, I ran one that went up and down a mountain. I had a lot of spare time for training.
With 2 Kids
Now the running I do involves errands, and sometimes I have to add coffee to get them done. What can I say? Lugging all my stuff and two kids and their stuff on and off public transportation requires serious stamina.
Before Kids
I was often busy at lunch time, but I endeavored to get something nutritious every day at midday. I preferred something that included vegetables and fruit.
With 2 Kids
Now my lunch time is even busier than before, and it’s so tempting to just eat the bits of lunch my children have rejected and then move on with our day.
Before Kids
Part of the time I didn’t even have my own washing machine, but I’d haul all my laundry out to a laundromat and get it all done in one day, including all my linens.
With 2 Kids
While I like to do laundry weekly, I definitely don’t keep up with sheets and towels that often, and when we’re really busy I just make sure everyone has at least one pair of clean underwear in their drawer before I panic.
Before Kids
I used to go to a dentist that I called the “spa dentist,” where I got a paraffin hand dip along with my cleaning. My insurance covers a cleaning every three months, and I took advantage of that benefit.
With 2 Kids
Regular brushing is where it’s at these days. I’m doing my best to get in an annual cleaning, but what I really aspire to is enjoying the breath-freshening power of a toothpaste that’s not flavored like a treat.
