Keeping Dad Informed of Baby's Firsts
When our six-year-old daughter was only three-months-old, I went back to work full-time. I didn’t start working from home until she was nearly four-years-old. There were lots of times I felt I was missing out on those little moments babies have. With baby boy, I’ve been fortunate to continue working from home since he was born. It’s been very different to be with him for each and every little moment. But, I realize that my husband probably feels the same way I did when I was working in an office, and I don’t want him to miss out. So, how do I keep dad informed of baby’s firsts and special moments?

My smart phone is probably my most used tool in keeping dad up to date of our baby boy’s antics. Any time he does something new or gets himself into a bit of trouble, there I am with my phone taking a picture. If baby boy makes a cute face, I try to catch it with a photo. If I’m lucky, he’ll do something long enough that I can actually catch a video of it too.
The beauty of this is that I can instantly share the moment with dad. I don’t have to wait for him to come home from work; I simply send him the photo or video with a brief explanation and he’s able to laugh along with me. I have never explicitly asked him, but I am sure he appreciates this and it helps him stay connected while at the office.
In return, whenever I have a business trip and am away from home for a couple of days, he does the same. It’s been a couple of times where I’ve been sitting in a conference session and had my phone buzz because he sent me a photo of our kids doing something silly. It’s such a great feeling to see your baby’s face on the screen when most unexpected; it brings the biggest smile to your face. So, I know that he must have the same reaction, which is why I continue to send him moments as they happen.
