Every Day She Exceeds My Expectations
Yesterday, while I was folding laundry on the other side of the couch from Elvie, I looked over and noted that she was a little bit further away from the Boppy pillow than I put her. “Huh,” I thought, “she must have scooched a little to reach a toy.” I needed to go grab another load of laundry out of the dryer, so I scooted her back to the pillow so that if she tipped over while I was out of the room, she wouldn’t hurt herself. I was down to the laundry room and back in short order, but when I returned, she was halfway across the room.
It was clear she hadn’t scooched there. She didn’t have time for that. My baby, home just four days from the hospital following recovery from major surgery, was crawling.
I probably shouldn’t be surprised. Elvie has consistently surprised us and everyone else with her capabilities. If she wants something, she goes after it, and today she saw the stethoscope we brought home from the hospital lying on the other side of the rug, and she was not going to wait for someone to come help her get it. When I walked in, she already had it in her mouth.
We joke a lot about how naughty she is. It really is true; the word no does not deter her, but rather inspires her to try harder. We love to brag about her latest naughty feat because for her, naughtiness is a gift she’ll need. That we intend to teach her to harness her mischievous tendencies for good is a given, but for now we are delighted that she would see something across the room that isn’t hers to have, decide she wants it, and just go get it.
She has beat a lot of odds in her little life, and it is all because of her determination. Every day I watch her with wonder and awe. I can’t wait to see what she surprises us by doing next. I just hope it’s not something I forgot to childproof for.
