Delighting in the Little Things

Being super pregnant while dealing with the ups and downs of parenting an ever-changing toddler has definitely been one of my most challenging life experiences to date. Pregnancy is pretty exhausting in and of itself, but when you add in a constant stream of toddler energy and boundary testing to the mix, you’ve got a recipe for some serious testing of your patience. I am constantly reminding myself that pregnancy won’t last forever and that my two-year-old is still just learning. “She’s only been on this Earth for two years” is the mantra I keep repeating to myself on those extra difficult days. Lately I’ve been reminding myself to stop and take deep breaths and delight in all the little and wonderful things in my life, because they really do outweigh these minor frustrations. Here are just a few of the little things I’ve been delighting in lately…

Delighting in the Little Things

*Watching my toddler explore nature. She loves being outside and seeing her unearth new discoveries about the world around her bring me such joy and a fresh set of eyes.

*Little baby kicks. I’ll admit that sometimes these baby kicks are uncomfortable and make it difficult to sleep, but just knowing that I’m growing a little human is a pretty cool thing and these kicks are confirmation that he’s thriving in there.

*Sunny weather. It’s been gorgeously sunshiney and warm here in Portland and we’ve been soaking up every minute of it! Vitamin D is definitely good for the soul.

*Seeing my toddler begin to comprehend emotions. Just the other day I was feeling overwhelmed and frustrated about something and she came over and hugged me and said, “I’m sorry Mama. Don’t be sad. I will protect you.” It’s so sweet seeing her really begin to learn empathy and it makes my heart swell with happiness.

*Getting things set up for Baby Brother’s arrival. It’s crazy to think we could meet him any day!

*Ice cream. I’m pregnant, so obviously ice cream had to be on this list.

*Seeing my husband’s relationship with our daughter flourish. For a long time I was the heavily preferred parent, but lately they’ve really been bonding and it’s so sweet to see! A few nights ago, she snuggled right up to him on the couch, laid her head on his chest and said, “I love you so much Daddy! You’re so cute!”

What are some little things you’ve been delighting in lately? I’d love to hear! It’s always so nice to focus on the happy parts of our lives together!
