Baby's First Owie

Babies get bumps and bruises; it’s just a part of life with a little one. Figuring out how to roll over, sit up, crawl and walk is a process of trial and error, which sometimes means that Baby will end up with an owie (or 12) from time to time. As of this past week, we had been pretty lucky to go 8 whole months without any bumps or bruises, but it finally happened.

Baby's First Owie

I was getting Fern ready for the day while she played in her room and I opened her dresser drawer to pull out a pair of socks for her and she suddenly toppled over from her seated position and bumped her head right on the corner of the dresser drawer. So sad! She only cried for about 30 seconds and then she was fine. I on the other hand? Felt terrible. Worst mother of the year award, right here. She seemed no worse for the wear, but I couldn’t help feeling guilty for not catching her fall.

I suppose this is just the first of many times in Fern’s future when I won’t be able to keep her from getting hurt – both physically and emotionally. It got me thinking about if she ever gets a broken bone or gets shunned by the popular girls at school. I hope I’ll be able to keep it together during those moments. I guess you can’t protect your kids from everything, but you can love them and help them get through the tough moments.

Have any of you experienced a first owie moment with your baby?
