A Hat for a Newborn Baby

A few weeks before our oldest daughter was born, my husband suddenly became obsessed with finding just the right hat for her to wear after birth.

I have no idea why this struck him as so incredibly important, but I do remember coming home one evening to find him searching Etsy (I didn’t even know he knew what Etsy WAS) for the perfect hat. Keep in mind that our baby was due in the middle of July, so we weren’t exactly dealing with freezing temperatures here – a hat was definitely not an absolute necessity for this child. He couldn’t pinpoint exactly what he was looking for (I gravitated towards ones with ears like this Winnie the Pooh one), but he said he’d know the right one when he saw it.

And then, one afternoon at work, I got a text from him telling me gleefully that the problem had been solved because one of his managers had just come by to bring him two handknit baby caps. Apparently she did this for anyone on the team who had a child, and we were the next lucky recipients.

Of course, when our baby was actually born, she wore just the standard issue stretchy hospital hat and the knitted cap that had been so carefully packed away in our hospital bag didn’t even see the light of day until well after we returned home (and then we had to take it off after about five pictures because our apartment had no air conditioning and it was really way too warm for a hat).

Baby with a HatAnd after that day, I don’t think she ever wore a hat again.
