A Backyard Movie Night Birthday Party
It’s finally the season for being outdoors! From barbecues and picnics to bonfires and movie nights, there are so many amazing things to enjoy with the entire family. When my daughter turned two, we threw her a Backyard Movie Night Birthday Party. She loves movies, hot dogs, and popcorn, so we thought it would be her dream come true! The party was surprisingly easy to plan. We even made the movie screen ourselves! Click through to see all of the fun details…
Lights! Camera! Action!

I LOVE how the invitations turned out. My amazing cousin designed these for us and they were absolutely perfect!
DIY Backyard Movie Screen
We made our movie screen out of a painter’s drop cloth, pvc pipe, and some rope. It was surprisingly easy to put together and didn’t cost a lot of money, either!
The setup for a backyard movie night is easy – blankets in the front for the babies and kids, lawn chairs in the back for the adults. Start your party 30 minutes before the sun goes down and put the movie on once it’s dark out!
The Food Table
Everything was really simple. We served concession-style food so guests could easily eat and come back for more!
Hot dogs are the perfect movie night food! I kept the hot dogs warm in a crockpot for a few hours before the party, then they were nice and hot and ready to eat once the guests arrived…
Popcorn & Cupcakes!
No movie is complete with popcorn and no birthday is complete without cake! I found some cute chevron popcorn bags on Etsy that made serving popcorn easy! Cupcakes were perfect, too – as we didn’t have to cut and serve like a typical birthday cake.
I bought a bunch of mini candy bars and arranged them on a tray like something you’d see at a concession stand. It was a cute addition to the party!
After guests got their food and once the sun was down, we started the movie!
Blowing Out the Candles
About halfway through the movie, we stopped for an “intermission.” Addie blew out her birthday candles as we sang “Happy Birthday.” Then, she opened her presents.
The Birthday Girl
Addie was in heaven all night – movies, popcorn, hot dogs, and all her friends and family made the perfect birthday celebration!
The twinkle lights put off just enough light that everyone could still see to eat or open presents. We didn’t want it to be pitch black, but we wanted it dark enough we could see the movie.
With little ones, timing can be hard. Especially when you need the party late enough for it to be dark outside. Be understanding if guests need to leave before the movie is over, so they can get their little ones home to bed.
Fun For All
The best thing about this party is that it was fun for everyone – kiddos and adults alike. Choose a movie that everyone will love!
The screen made a fun shadow activity for the little ones, too! They loved being able to see themselves on the screen…
