8 Unusual Baby Names That Are Getting Popular in 2013
Back in 2012, I used a mixture of baby name stats and pop-culture know-how to predict which baby names might be the future Sophias and Aidens. (Watch out for Harper and Penelope, and don’t underestimate Declan and Asher.)
Yet the name experts at Nameberry.com did their own charting and analyzing to come up with their own list of unique names on the upswing. A list of names that are getting popular at a faster rate than the norm. Whether they signify a temporary trend or an eventual rise to the tippy-top — well only time will tell.
8 Unique Baby Names Getting Popular
These baby names might sound unique, but they’re quickly rising up the popularity ranks…
Nameberry credits the meteoric rise of baby boy Bentley (rising 915 spots in five years) due largely to the show Teen Mom, especially considering Bentley’s mom, Maci, has seen her name climb the charts recently, too.
While the traditional Chloe is a strong Top 10 favorite, the Kardashian franchise has single-handedly caused this signature name to jump 620 spots, into the Top 50. TOP 50, people!
I pegged the name “Mila” as a rising star and Nameberry seems to agree. The name can only increase as actress Mila Kunis (who is suspected of originally catapulting this name into the realm of popularity) gets even more visible. She seems to be everywhere right now.
Olivia is a chart-topping name right now, so it only seems natural that this more unique yet similar name, Olive, would get popular. (It also helps that Drew Barrymore and Isla Fisher chose this name for their daughters.) According to Nameberry, “Olive” jumped 583 places, landing at Number 416.
Another twist on a chart-topping name, Gemma sounds a lot like “Emma,” but without the extreme popularity. Although this has long been popular in the UK, it’s only registered on the US list within the last 5 years — in which it shot up to number 532.
Kellan first registered on the Top 1,000 list in 2007, and now it’s up to Number 363! (I’m sure the Twilight character helped this unique name’s image.)
Reigning name champ “Jack” inspired the name Jackson to rise into Top 5 status, and now it’s time for Jax to follow suit. This super-cool blend between two name favorites — Jack and Max — has climbed 494 places in no time.
Aria is gaining popularity, and like so many of these soon-to-be-popular name choices, pop culture played a hand. Aria is the lead character on the TV show Pretty Little Liars and the similar name Arya is a character on Game of Thrones.
