As a mom of two littles, I find that my days get really busy, really fast. Some days I look at the clock, and it’s already 5:30pm, and I really don’t know where the time went. Did that pile of laundry really take that long? I haven’t even folded it all! Of paramount importance during my day is the care of my children, but in the rush of getting what needs to be taken care of immediately done, some babycare basics often fall by the wayside. For me, it’s always the same three items on the babycare list. These are my three. Do you ever forget to do basic things? What do you forget? Whatever it is, know that you are not alone.
I know I should remember…
…but sometimes my busy mama brain just can’t keep up.
Babies’ nails grow fast!
At least, that’s what I tell myself. In theory, I want to do this on a certain day of the week, every week, at bathtime. In practice, sometimes the week goes whooshing by, and I miss a week without realizing it. Suddenly I find myself staring at my baby’s very dirty, very long nails at the playground, and I realize I must have missed a week…or two?
How do tiny ears get so dirty?
In the bath, I give Elvie a full wash, and I run the washcloth over her ears, but I really need to use a cotton swab to get the worst of the playground dirt out. I normally realize this when Elvie has fallen asleep on my lap and I can get a good look at her ears…right at a time when I don’t want to be waking her by swiping gunk off her outer ear with a cotton swab.
I get her hands done, and then I get distracted.
Like many children, Elvie is not a fan of having her hands and face cleaned after a meal. I always do her hands first since that’s what she’ll use to do the most stain-inducing damage to the house once she’s out of the high chair, and sometimes she puts up so much of a fight that when I’m done with her hands, I mistakenly think I’m done, period. Later I’ll look over and see a smear of cheese sauce on her face and realize I was wrong.
Are there babycare basics you forget, too?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Maybe you forget to pack a sun hat sometimes or neglect to get the neck area under baby’s chin clean at every bath. We busy moms have all been there, and our babies – dirty faces and improvised sun hats and all – are all still clearly loved and adored.
