2013 Baby Name Trend: Downton Abbey
I didn’t think it was possible, but it seems like Downton Abbey is getting even more popular. So popular, in fact, that TheBump.com cited the TV show as playing a big role in this year’s pregnancy trends. Why? Because they predict more parents will use the Downton Abbey period for baby name inspiration — meaning more Elsies, Ediths, and Annas.
In case you’re unfamiliar, Downton Abbey is a wildly popular show about British aristocrats (and their help) in the early 20th century. This trend isn’t unimaginable, considering many parents are starting to pluck baby names from the very early 1900s (think Charlotte, Lily, and Eleanor), making for a “little old lady” name comeback. If The Hundred Year Rule is right (in that popular baby names cycle in 100-year intervals), it’s not surprise that names from the 1920s will soon come back into fashion. And thanks to Downton Abbey, it’s with a little British flair.
