Pinterest has done a lot for the mom community — stealing our nap time, for one thing — and this might be most evident in the types of parties we’re throwing for our kids.
Aside from recipes, wedding inspiration, and quotes, Pinterest is known for their party planning ideas. You may not set out to have a “trendy” 1st birthday party, but then you log on and GAH! This is such a cute idea! And this! And I could totally make this!
And before you know it, you’re knee-deep in party ideas, all in a succinct theme.
As you might expect, certain themes pop up more often than others — with more decorating, food, and DIY ideas than the norm:
Birthday Party Ideas
If you’re looking for themes with the most inspiration circulating on the giant Interwebs, try one of these 15 “trendy” birthday party ideas….
Rainbow
The infamous “rainbow cake” is a classic Pinterest find — splashed across many a Pinterest board, in its many varieties. We took a (somewhere over the) rainbow approach for my son’s Wizard of Oz party (shown), but the amount of rainbow party ideas are numerous x infinity.

Vintage
This party from Sweet Cheek’s Tasty Treats was one of the original “vintage” party ideas — a sweet vintage schoolhouse theme, which I’ve seen for baby showers, 1st birthday parties, and even weddings. Yet it’s super trendy to make any birthday party “vintage” — whether it’s vintage circus, vintage cowgirl, vintage books, vintage trains….

Superheroes
These are shots from our recent Superhero Party, although there are countless superhero theme ideas out there — especially vintage superhero comic book parties, girly “supergirl” parties, and parties around certain superhero characters.

Books
This is a mega popular theme — especially for 1st and 2nd birthdays, when books are so memorable and beloved.

Art
Art parties have universal appeal (appropriate for the littlest birthday guests all the way up to preteens), and the Internet isn’t short on ideas — like DIY canvases, art décor, art stations, art-palette food, etc. You can actually buy an entire art party planning tutorial from One Charming Party.

Shapes
More and more parties are popping up with non-theme themes — specifically shapes like stripes, polka dots, chevron, and confetti. This is an especially attractive idea for 1st birthday parties, considering newly 1-year-olds don’t have many opinions on party themes — yet it gives parents fun design ideas to replicate.

Tea Party
Whether it’s Alice related or not, a tea party is such a sweet idea for a 1st or 2nd birthday party — like this adorable example from On To Baby.

Carnival/Circus
The same people who brought us the neon 2nd birthday party originally created this circus 1st birthday party — which is a hugely popular theme right now.

Disney Princesses
Creative takes on the classic “Disney Princess” theme abound on Pinterest — like this gorgeous Snow White party from Anders Ruff.

Disney Pixar UP
But if there’s one “trendy” Disney theme a la Pinterest, it has to be UP — specifically that cake from Blissfully Sweet Cakes. It’s also the perfect way to work in balloons to your birthday party theme.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Oh, the ideas you’ll find — like this super-clever airplane party (featuring an airline-ticket invitation and a “baggage claim” for goody bags) from Little Frills as seen on Hip Hip Horray.
