Tomorrow my darling baby girl will be turning 1 year old. I can barely stand it. After all, it’s no newsflash that mothers tango with the bittersweet which is their baby; growing from infant, to baby, to toddler, to child.
It’s of the stuff that makes our hearts palpitate, burst, flutter and weep. The Internet tells me that once she turns 1, all of a sudden she’ll be a toddler. Well, I beg to differ. She’s not walking, talking (much) or saucing (much), yet. So i’m just going to keep her a baby a wee bit longer, okay?
We had a lovely party for her over the past weekend, with all the hoopla. Tomorrow it will be just us, her favourite foods (grilled salmon – I know, right? Carrots, potatoes and cherries.) and probably a mini cupcake. With candle. Of course.
Now that we have that all sorted, I’d like to share some of the most impressive fantasy cakes that you could ever imagine bestowing upon a little baby girl on their 1st birthday. Sure, a muffin or a donut, or a brownie with a candle works too (basically anything you can stick a candle in) – but really. I am here but to inspire and amuse. Mostly though, amuse. Epic cake magnificence after the jump!
'UP'
This whimsical cake would be well-suited for a boy or girl’s birthday party. Most cities and towns have a reputable cake maker. Just do a little research and ask them if they could do their own version of an UP themed birthday cake! Unless of course you are your own cake boss.

'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'
This book is a favourite in our house. Apparently inspiring children and cake makers alike. Which makes sense, since an artist is nothing without imagination. If young children had the steady hand-eye coordination of an adult, they’d be winning all the cake and cupcake wars.

'The Princess & The Frog'
This. Right here. Pure brilliance. What with the globe and the quilting and the cattails.

'Minnie Mouse'
So petite and darling, perfect for a little girl’s 1st turn around the moon. That and you absolutely must click the link to see all of the photos of adorable Tenley’s soiree. Her momma wins all the Martha Stewart prizes.

'Olivia'
Uhm, s’cuse me, but you just died. From cute. Right? This, quite possibly, is my favourite, because PIGS. Baby ones, specifically – are achingly cute.

'Alice In Wonderland'
Oh, be-still my little girl heart. Alice In Wonderland is one of the greatest stories/movies ever. Hands down. That this cake exists, pleases my ever-loving mind.

'Tinkerbell'
I’ve been a believer of the Fae long before Sookie Stackhouse came along. While Tinkerbell’s lack of clothing is arguably less than Sookie’s (how does that work, even?), Tinkerbell is way less naughty than Sookie and more age appropriate for your little girl’s 1st b-day cake. Plus, this cake. Charming, elegant and divine.

'Spirited Away'
My favourite animated movie. Hands down. I asked for it for 2 years for Christmas and finally got it last year. Writer/Director Hayao Miyazaki is an absolute genuis and if you haven’t seen it, get to it!

Strawberry Shortcake
I’d be remiss to not include the cake I made just a mere few days ago for my little girl’s shindig. She’s not overly fond of sweets, so I had a feeling this whipped-creamy, chiffon-er-iffous, berry-licious cake would be right up her alley. Indeed it was.

DIY 'Finding Nemo'
Way. Too. Cute. If you’ve the time or inclination, I highly recommend trying out this DIY tute. The step by step pictures are quite helpful and it actually doesn’t look all that difficult. You know, if you are into the wacky sub-culture of baking and DIY’ing.
